The blog of McDoomington
My biggest problem with “dumb fun” games, is when they are not fun…

The problem with ‘dumb’ games is that most of them are atrociously designed. Thor is not a film that’s going to challenge any particularly intellectual ideas, but it’s well acted, directed, and written, and it looks good. It has production values - care has been taken over it. Uncharted 2 is the same in that regard. The problem with something like Call of Duty as a ‘dumb’ game is that it’s fairly shoddily designed - it doesn’t do scripting well (and yet it does so much scripting the developers can legitimately be called control freaks, I often felt like the game was trying to be like my grandmother backseat driving), it’s writing is full of holes (MW2 and MW3), it’s writing is so bad that a simple story is hard to follow (Black Ops).

Likewise, a lot of games make a fairly insultingly-small use of the medium’s inherent strengths, because their project leads are wannabe film-makers who didn’t make the cut; that’s certainly a portion of what people are talking about when they’re derisive towards ‘dumb’ games.

On a related note, can anyone recommend me some games where the devs just focus on making a good engine, and letting the gameplay do it’s thing (not Halo, or any Xbox exclusives).

A rant on shitty DRM

Once again it’s up to me to point out that captain obvious should be hired by game companies.

I’m going to be using Diablo 3 as my example, but this applies to DRM in general…

This should be made into an actual game.

Let’s see if I can put down what I got out of it…

They say none of this is solid, and it’s a work in process. Good there, because what they were saying with ME3 sounded more like promises and solid statements than just throwing things out there. Glad they clarified that.

A mention of how “Lots of good things, and some bad things, were seen in DA2”. What a load of bullshit, DA2 FUCKING SUCKED as hack and slash and as an RPG.

They’re done with DA2’s story (meaning no more DLC)- good, the game should be killed with fire. At least they had the sense to quit before the dug the hole even deeper.

“Stop Reusing Levels, Decisions That Matter, Equipment for Followers”
All things they had in DA:O and took out in DA2. It would’ve been obvious to very EVERYONE that doing so in the first place was a bad idea, but at least now they seem to have realized it themselves. That’s a plus I suppose.

“Stop Reusing Levels: WILL DO!”
Congrats? Come on, you shouldn’t have done that in the first place. I mean, really?
Along with some decent pictures of concept art. Looks decent, but nothing special.

“Decisions That Matter: YES!”
Good. They promised this with DA2 and ME3 though, and for some reason it was only marginally successful, if at all, in both of them. We’ll see what happens when DA3 comes out, but I’m honestly not keeping my hopes up.

To add on to that:
“Character Agency/Player Agency:” Players want control over their own experiences, and they want their character to have an effect on the world.
Good, but that should be obvious. They’re currently saying that they’ll make sure those are both going to be put into the game, which is good, but also something that should be there in the first place. Nothing special or new.

“Equipment For Followers: YES!”
Yay, they’ve brought this back as well (hopefully, remember they already said nothing is solid). Should’ve been included in the last game though.

A shoutout to the cosplayers, mention of “busy battles” (hopefully not like the battles in DA2… We’ll see). Mention of how the lack of equipment customization allowed cosplayers to actually dress up as characters, and how it allowed the characters to be easier identified on the battlefield (which I never had an issue with in DA:O. Did anyone else?)

Further mention of how they will make the different armor pieces will make visual changes to the different characters, but also look different on different characters. Good, but I feel like this will mean that there will be less armor types in the games. We’ll see how it works out. (Mentions of changing colors/materials of armors. We’ll see if that gets put in.) I’m thinking an armor system similar to Mass Effect’s, with the ability to customize the armor on your followers as well.

Overall, good, but nothing special or particularly interesting. More just saying that they’re going to get back to what they had in DA:O, while combining the better parts of DA:2 (nothing). Let’s hope they live up to it. For me, I’m going to wait until the game has been out a few weeks before even thinking about purchasing it. Saved me money on DA2 and ME3.

On a related note, voiced characters in RPGs:

I’m sick of them, if you’re going to let me characterize the character, let my imagination fill the gap, otherwise don’t bother with wasting money on boring voice actors. Also, being “like a movie” is the stupidest thing you can do with a video game, I don’t pay $60 for an interactive movie, so decide if you want a movie, or game, because you can’t have both motherfuckers.

EDIT: The tags are supposed to say “ENOUGH PONIES MORE ON GAMES! voiced characters in RPGs suck dragon age 3 DA3 DA2 sucks as an RPG and an action game”

EDIT: I think it’s amzing how this has been around for a few hours and nobody cared and in the moment Laura reblogged this it became the most reblogged post on my site…

Due to the fact that I’ve just reached 50 followers I thought I could recreat that little “click and drag”-game I’ve seen with the Mane 6 and several others a while ago. But this time it’s made with some of the pony OC of tumblr. I hope you’ll like it.

For those who have no idea how it works (well I had no idea before…): You’ll have to move your cursor over one of the category pictures and then just click and drag the picture to the side. As long as you don’t release the mouse (I mean as long as you won’t stop “clicking”) you’ll see who your friend, enemy, etc. will be.

I’m thinking about redoing it (again) with everypony from the tumblrpony wikia and in a higher quality, but I’ll wait untill I’ve got another 50 followers before releasing that one. *evil grin* >:)

Oh and by the way the “name” displayed under the pony’s portrait is also the tumblr adress. Just put a .tumblr.com after it and you’ll get to know more about your “partner in crime”.

My results…

My teacher: Friendly Twilight.

My sibling: Ask Naughty Luna (like that’ll stop her).

My best friend: Ask Princess Molestia.

My spouse: Ask human Luna (Woot, no awkward human-pony sex issues… wait, my best friend and sister are Molestia and Naughty Luna, nevermind).

My enemy: Ask-Loona.

My savior: Ask Twilightsparkle (maybe she’ll save me from Molestia and NL with that checklist).

While I’m at it, here’s part 2.
